Here is a gallery of a few photos I took while crusin’ up Highway 1. Stories to come
So, I am happy today because I made my first sale form the new studio. “Dogpatch Afternoon” was one of the 4 paintings I finished while at San Onofre in June. A good friend and teaching partner, Christine Wood was meeting me in the studio today to discuss some upcoming projects we are collaborating on. When we were all done she says. “Rich, I need to look at your paintings again. I think there is something there that I need to get… ” and she left with this in her hand. I am so pleased. Thanks Chris!

So, if you’ve been watching my blog for any length of time, you would have heard me dreaming of the day when I could open an art center where a generous amount life and creativity would flow. I am compelled to help myself and others to have eyes to see and a voice to expose the injustices that surround them. I also hope to replace it by showing The Beautiful that is woven into everything around us. With this in mind, I have opened Blue Sky Art Center in my community; Camarillo, CA. I have been surrounding myself with many people with the same heart as myself to impact our world with the Arts. I have many artists, seasoned college professors, a lawyer and other community leaders, willing to invest time and effort into making this art center a reality to impact our world. In both lean times and in times of growth, we need prophets to share the stories of creation, redemption and of healing. The Arts have a special ability to affect social change. As a creator who sees value in this, I want to create a permanent space that will become into a regional destination where this can take place… where artists learn to be seers, where the voice of the Creator can speak through creation, affirm His people and lead in change.
So, I have embedded Blue Sky Art Center in the SCIART Studios because there is so much creative inertia, and it makes good sense to go where there is already movement in the same direction. To get the ball rolling, I have posted a list of classes on the website. See if there is any offerings that you or your kids would be interested in. CLASSES
I am so glad to be back in the groove after getting moved into my new studio. The SCIART Studios have so much energy. I hope to see many new faces wondering through the studios now that we have all come together into one place. Not since my college days have I been in an environment with so much creative life swirling around me. Its inspiring and hopeful. Now… to get to work and start painting. Well, earlier last week I did just that. I started on Monday in Dave Gallup’s studio and got my feet wet with a small still-life study. Then on Tuesday, I went out with a group to the Limonera Ranch where we all found a little niche to sit a while and find our peace with the scenery. I came up with this roadway between a small creek and an eucalyptus lined orange orchard. It was a great way to get my new studio life started… outdoors!

I have three partners that will be sharing my new studio. Dennis Peterson, Gretel Compton and Nobel (Ace) Powell. Dennis and I spent the better part of yesterday building the frames for our new walls and adding the skins to them. These walls will help add a great bit of wall space in order to show the work of each of the artists. Although the windows are fantastic, they take up all that wall space. Tomorrow, painting and installation.

Announcing: Camarillo Figure Artists. Starting in mid-September, I will be hosting uninstructed life-drawing and painting workshops on Thursday evenings from 7 to 10 pm at 2222 Ventura Blvd, Classroom A4. Most nights will begin one session of 2-minute poses, followed with twenty-five minute poses for the remainder of the evening. Once a month will be a long pose, so you can get a good chunk of time to paint or sculpt the model. We will have a mix of nude and costumed models and the details will always be posted in advance for each workshop. If you’re from around these parts and would like to join us, sign up to the mailing list at http://www.meetup.com/Camarillo-Figure-Artists
As we approach mid summer, I have some news to share. Last week I signed a 12 month lease for an art studio. Studio Channel Islands Art Center (SCIART) has acquired a long-term lease with the local school district to use most of the class rooms of an old elementary school as studio space for local artists. This is their “AIRS” program which stands for Artists in Residence. Many professional artists have space here and I am SO looking forward to the synergy of sharing space in an art community. This is my first baby step to developing my dream. As many of you know, I have been dreaming of opening an art studio to teach from as well as do my own art work for a few years. Blue Sky Art Center is my dream who’s mission is to “be a shelter for a sacred creative community; to facilitate personal and social change with the transformative power of creating art and through exhibitions, education and outreach; to create a forum for cultural engagement centered on contemporary social issues.” Along with the quarter class room I will be sharing, there is an entire empty class room that can be used for larger gatherings for teaching and hosting workshops. Keep an eye out here for more news.
OK. a simple post… So I have added a new feature to the website… a tip jar. I have posted some pretty high resolution images that have been downloaded by many people for free.

Congratulations to a Quantae for the publishing of his new book which can be purchased at… quantaebook.com He is a fabulous human, a great father and fantastic model. Above is a painting I did of him in a workshop I hosted last year. Take a look at his book for more.
While spending a week soaking up the sun, making new friends and eating sparsely from my ice chest, I also painted at the San Onofre surf beach. I want to share one of the images here called “Two for the Show.” When I asked Jack, my VW man what year the red bus was, he says “Its obviously a 71, you got it all there.” The blue one is mine, which is a 77. Fun times spent at San Onofre.

So the theme of the week is San Onofre. Here Is a collection of what’s been happening so far for the Paint San Clemente event. I’ll tighten the bus painting soon.
