“Face of Love” being Exhibited at BIOLA

Yesterday I sent off the four completed diptychs in my “Face of Love” series. The went with John Alderson and his son Bryce to BIOLA University for an exhibit that will last the entire semester. It will be in the foyer of one of the buildings on campus. I will post photos of the display when I get them in. It seems a bit strange to send off my paintings and not be there to hang them. I fully trust John’s judgment, but still odd not to be there.  ;.)

Below is the current stage of the paintings. I have not displayed the “I was Thirsty” paints ever before, and (don’t tell anyone…) there is still a bit of work to be done on it. I want to fuss a bit with the faces still, but I need a break to do some other work, so I shipped them off as is for the time being. Click on an image to view larger.

I was sick – revisited

I am taking the lead of my friend and mentor Michael Pearce, in a continuing effort and reworking some previously “finished” paintings because of little (and big) dis-satisfactions. Here is the latest example of reworking Nicole answering the door after re-working her face and shirt. The figure to the left is being re-done as well with a new shirt and now wearing pants.

I was sick…

OK, Here is a brief update to show a newly painted (not lavender) sheet and a close-up on the face.

When I Was Sick – Revisited

So, I have decided to go back and rework a painting that I did about two years ago. The top one represents the painting as I had first laid it down on the canvas. Because I was so pleased with it as a first attempt to paint the human figure, and also with the fact that this is a painting of Steve, a close personal friend, who had just died of a short and desperate bout with cancer, I felt that it would have to do. Well, now with much more confidence with figure painting, I decided to pull this one out again and see where it goes. So after a couple of hours of working on it, you can see on the below image what form it is taking. I am much more pleased with this and I will continue on with the rest of the bedding to make it more neutral. Then off to the three figures in the right panel, as they too have a long way to go to get where I want them to be.

As I have my solo show coming up in October, and this series “The Face of Love” will be featured, I will also be working on finishing the final three diptychs addressing the themes of hunger, clean water and homelessness.

I Was Sick…

I was Sick, You Visited Me

I am getting closer to being finished with this. I had put it aside for about two months when I took a vacation from work and spent a couple of days at the painting room at Cal Lutheran where I am attending. It was great to be with a bunch of art students for a couple of days while being inspired to create again. I basically repainted the background of the entire left panel and then got this far with the right. I now only have to finish the bed rail and do some final detail work.

I was sick – “Finished”

I Was Sick
In case you were wondering how it came out… here is the painting with the first coat covering the entire surface. Now there is some final touches that I need to do… at least for the first round. I am sure the will be more to come.

I was sick

So here is my first round at my series… it is in progress. The brick color is actually the primer (gesso) and I will be working on it more this week. This will be titled “I was sick” which is to be followed with “and you visited me”

The “model” for this painting is… was a friend of mine who died last month of cancer. He was diagnosed in October, and degraded fast. He was sick… I visited him. I took a photo of him in his last days with this painting in mind. It has taken me this long to get the nerve to work it out on the canvas.

I am calling the series “The face of Love” based on Matthew 25: 35, 36…

I was hungry and you gave Me food
I was thirsty and you gave Me drink
I was a stranger and you took Me in
I was naked and you clothed Me
I was sick and you visited Me
I was in prison and you came to Me

Each scene will be a 36″x36″ modern scene that I am painting in oils, perhaps partially onsite. “I was thirsty…” could be a 14 year-old skater with no shirt, baggy pants hanging below his boxers. “You gave me Drink” could be a lemonade stand with two 8-year-old girls passing out free drinks. When complete the total count would be 12 images, which is VERY ambitious. I will be turning them in for a painting class I am taking at Cal Lutheran University. To “ace” the class, all I need to do is 4 paintings, but I may get on a roll and do all 12.

More later… Rich
